Black Adam starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tells the story of a powerful anti-hero with supernatural abilities and a desire for vengeance against those who wronged him in the past. #5  Spawn (1997)

Spawn is a dark superhero movie that will take you places. The film follows the story of Al Simmons, a former government assassin who is betrayed and killed by his own men. He is then resurrected as Spawn, a hellspawn with incredible powers who seeks revenge against those who wronged him.

The movie explores complex themes of redemption, sacrifice, and duty, making it a thought-provoking and compelling film that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Even though it’s a few years old, the performances and story still hold up, making it a great classic to enjoy.

#6 Steel (1997)

Shaquille O’Neal stars as the hero of the movie Steel. Yet another of the first black superhero movies, Steel follows the story of a weapons designer who becomes a superhero after his technology is stolen and used for evil. #7  Black Panther Wakanda Forever (2022)

The world will always mourn the loss of Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman who passed away in 2020 before the sequel to the popular superhero film could be filmed. However, the story and legacy of the black panther character lives on in Black Panther Wakanda Forever. The movie honors the passing of the star who built the character and continues to expand on what made the original movie such a success. With the loss of its beloved king, this film follows the attempts of Wakanda to defend their way of life and honor their king’s memory. Once more, the film features breathtaking visuals, powerful performances, and impactful commentary on race and identity. It’s truly a masterpiece.

#8  Fast Color (2018)

Fast Color is an indie film that walks a fine line between science fiction and superhero movies. It follows a young woman named Ruth who discovers she possesses supernatural abilities. Fleeing from government agents who desire to exploit her powers, she returns to her estranged family in the Middle West for safety. As they come to terms with their own inherited abilities, they must all work together to protect Ruth and save the world from an impending disaster. With stellar performances from Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, and Saniyya Sidney, Fast Color delivers a fresh take on the superhero genre with themes of family, self-discovery, and redemption.

#9 Catwoman (2004)

Catwoman follows Patience Phillips (Halle Berry), a shy graphic designer who is murdered after discovering a dangerous secret. Revived by an ancient Egyptian cat, Patience gains cat-like abilities and adopts a new persona as Catwoman. Sleight is a standout black superhero movie due to its unique take on the genre.
